Principled Leadership for Hillsborough County
Every elected office matters. As Register of Probate, Maidment brings transparency and accountability to county government, ensuring that even as the role evolves, Hillsborough County residents have a dedicated public servant in their corner.
The Register of Probate is a constitutional office with no current duties, a result of the 2011 court consolidation. Maidment supports the bipartisan effort (CACR 13) to let voters decide whether to formally remove this vestigial office from the NH Constitution in November 2026.
Probate matters affect every family at their most difficult moments. While the operational duties now rest with Circuit Court clerks, Maidment advocates for a probate system that remains accessible, efficient, and compassionate for families navigating estate matters in Hillsborough County.
Transparency About the Future of This Office
The Register of Probate has been a constitutional office since New Hampshire's founding. However, in 2011, when the state consolidated its courts, all substantive duties were transferred to court clerks. The office remains in our Constitution but currently has no statutory authority or operational duties.
In 2022, the Legislature overwhelmingly passed a constitutional amendment to abolish the office (House 294-43, Senate 21-3). While 63.7% of voters supported it, constitutional amendments require a two-thirds supermajority. It fell just short.
Christopher Maidment believes in honest, transparent governance. He supports the bipartisan CACR 13 effort to let voters decide this question again in 2026. Until then, he's committed to serving with integrity and finding ways to add value for Hillsborough County residents.
